A Creative Simplicity: Use of Wood in Workspaces

A Creative Simplicity: Use of Wood in Workspaces
22/02/2024

Workspaces in homes have become an indispensable part of modern life. Especially with the recent trend of remote working, the importance of creating an efficient and comfortable working environment in our homes is increasing. At this point, the use of wood in interior design offers the perfect way to make workspaces warm, inviting and efficient.

Choosing the right material is important to increase productivity and create a creative atmosphere in workspaces. At this point, wood stands out as a unique material in terms of aesthetics and functionality in the workspaces allocated in homes.  The use of wood in interior design evokes a feeling of peace and warmth. This is a physiological response resulting from our association of wood with nature. Being surrounded by wood and other natural elements has an effect that reduces stress and anxiety levels. Working in a calmer, more inviting space that you actually enjoy being in can be a productivity booster. In the rest of the article, we will take a look at workspaces created using wood in home interiors.

The first example belongs to the Hoko House project by Skylab Architecture. We see the office area, which is part of the house design, and a qualified example of the use of wood in the design. It is seen that two separate spaces are created with an original design. An asymmetrical table, which follows the trace of a unique cut window and is located in the center of the room, divides the space. The window cuts the wall and ceiling as if the building was divided in two. It is seen that wood is the main character that gives the atmospheric character of the office.

Another example is a house design by Studio Wills+Architects. The study room designed here was created by converting an unused balcony. Therefore, it is also inspiring to reuse unused, idle areas in the house! It reminds us that decorating a workspace at home is not only for closed spaces, even a hollow can be turned into a workspace with a different decor. By coloring the wood, it takes on a whole new character and defines the frame of the space, adding a distinguished aesthetic to the space. Contrasting with the white color of the rest of the space and doubling its effect with the light leaking through the window, the space has also been transformed into a very compact and efficient workspace. The result is a space that is both professional, inviting, contemporary and functional.

Framing the workspace with wood material and making it defined creates a holistic language. The warm and natural texture of the wood revitalizes the working environment and offers an environment that helps to relax mentally and emotionally. The naturalness and warmth created by the holistic harmony of wood perfectly harmonizes with other modern materials and allows flexibility to be used with a minimalist style.

Compact yet assertive, this workspace design combines functionality and aesthetics in the same pot. The effect of wood plays a big role in the design. The contrast it creates with the rest of the space gives this area a modern identity. This minimal attitude, which creates a memorable effect with simple movements, is another factor that feeds this identity. For those who want an original and functional workspace idea for narrow spaces, this design idea seems worth noting.

Designed for a family of five in California, this house is designed in a very contemporary style with refined details. It may not be easy to allocate large volumes to the work area in every home. However, in cases where there is a suitable space, the use of wood in this example can be inspiring. The dividing wooden mass, which also fulfils the function of a shelf, turns into a sign that surrounds the work area. In addition to being both aesthetic and functional, it reinforces the holistic quality of the space together with the tables. There is no doubt that the calm and soft atmosphere it creates will increase productivity. The design confirms the presence of wood, not only in terms of durability, but also in terms of its ability to gain character over time and retain its beauty even as it ages.
