Yoga is a meditative practice that promotes physical and mental balance, as well as inner peace and spiritual fulfillment. In recent years, it has gained increasing popularity, with many people choosing to practice yoga. As a result, the design of yoga centers and studios has become a topic of interest and consideration.

Yoga spaces should create a relaxing, peaceful, and motivating atmosphere for practitioners. Basic design elements, such as light, color, materials, and space, can help keep a yoga center well-organized.

In this week's blog post, especially for Earth Day on June 21st, we will provide an overview of the elements that should be considered in the architectural design of yoga centers.

Light

Yoga is an experience that promotes healing of both body and mind. The use of natural light can create an impressive atmosphere in yoga spaces. Since natural light is a symbol of positive energy, it can increase concentration during yoga. Therefore, it is important to include large windows in the design of these spaces. Wide-span windows can create the sensation of being in nature. Kamadhenu Yoga Studio, designed by Carolina Echevarri + Alberto Burckhardt's architecture office, features large windows and doors. This design allows light to enter the space from different angles throughout the day, creating a spacious atmosphere.

Color
Colors play a crucial role in determining the atmosphere of a space, including yoga areas and other interior designs. Choosing warm and soft color tones can create a calming effect, while pastel tones can create a peaceful feeling. Therefore, light tones that symbolize calmness or nature should be used in yoga places. An excellent example of using light-tone colors is the ‘Original Feeling Yoga Studio’ designed by ‘Some Place Studio’. The architectural design team created a spacious atmosphere in the interior by using white tones for the floors and curtains.

Material
Natural materials are widely preferred in yoga spaces. Using sustainable materials in the interior can support the basic understanding of yoga. Materials such as wooden floors, bamboo coverings, or natural stone are preferred in these areas. This way, the interior design can contribute to creating an inner connection between yoga practitioners and nature. Located in England, the ‘Rammed Earth Yoga Studio’ has remarkable details in its material choices both indoors and outdoors. The building offers strong connections with nature through its facade details and interior design.

Furthermore, these materials offer high acoustic performance. While it is ideal for yoga to take place in nature, this can be challenging in urban environments. Therefore, it is important to prioritize the use of sound insulation materials in yoga studios located in city centers. This will facilitate inner focus for practitioners. To achieve this, insulation materials that prevent the passage of external sound can be used in these areas.

Space
In yoga spaces, it is important to have well-organized space and order. A spacious interior can create a comfortable atmosphere for users. To achieve this, use a classical yoga mat size as the basis for the yoga activity areas. A 60-185 cm yoga mat provides freedom of movement for users. By leaving at least 50 cm of space between two mats, you can organize the activity area and eliminate the feeling of restriction during yoga.

The architectural design of yoga spaces should support users' search for inner peace and mental balance. Basic design elements such as light, color, materials, and space can facilitate focusing on yoga practice. By carefully planning these elements, users can relax, heal, and achieve inner balance.
