Especially in the post-pandemic period, the advantages and disadvantages of open-plan offices have become increasingly evident. Constant distractions, noise, and lack of privacy have made it difficult for employees to maintain focus. According to a study, 31% of employees working in open offices reported a decrease in their productivity due to the inability to work in a quiet environment (TMMOB Interior Architects Association Journal, 2021).
However, fully enclosed, traditional cubicle-style offices do not offer a complete solution either. In such environments, collaboration and interaction tend to decrease, which in turn reduces overall productivity. Therefore, the key question in office design is not merely “open or closed?”. What truly matters is finding smart solutions that can offer both opportunities for teamwork and spaces for individual focus—together, in balance.
Establishing Balance in Office Design with Modular Systems
Modular partition systems enable offices to transform not only physically, but also functionally and psychologically. Unlike fixed walls, these systems are not permanent, allowing spaces to open up when needed or provide isolation when necessary. This flexibility makes it possible to expand and unite areas for collaborative work, while also defining clear boundaries when individual focus is required.

The impact of physical spaces on employee psychology is an undeniable reality. An article published in Mimarlık magazine (Issue 361) emphasizes that spatial design has a direct influence on employee behavior, highlighting how transparent surfaces can fulfill the need for personal space while also supporting social interaction.
Semi-open spaces designed with modular glass partitions allow natural light to pass through, creating a bright and airy atmosphere, while also providing a sense of personal workspace. When people work under the right conditions, their productivity and motivation increase—proving just how crucial workspace design truly is. Properly planned work environments have a direct impact on the quality of the work employees produce.

Flexibility = Sustainability
Another significant advantage of modular systems is sustainability. In certification processes such as LEED or BREEAM, spatial flexibility is considered a major asset.
