Heatherwick Studio, a British architectural firm known for its groundbreaking projects in contemporary architecture and urban design, is embarking on an ambitious project to reshape Louisville's historic Belvedere Park. This project, which is still in the design phase, aims to revitalize the city park, which opened in 1973 and has been in need of renovation over time, with Heatherwick Studio's unique touches.
The transformation will bring a multi-purpose community space to the city and transform Belvedere Park into the city's “green living room.” “Belvedere has an incredible potential to become a new green 'living room' for Louisville and its people. Our design will stitch together the Ohio riverfront and connect it to the expansive parks beyond. We've been listening to the community and hear a huge appetite for something powerful, exciting and new to happen.”
Belvedere Park, located in the center of Louisville on the banks of the Ohio River, serves as a bridge between the city's natural landscape and urban life. The new structure, designed by Heatherwick Studio, aims to make the park more accessible and inviting, offering residents and visitors a unique public space. The renderings of the park show a large, undulating pavilion structure situated on the raised platform of the Belvedere. The structure leans towards the center, merging with the ground and exhibiting a dynamic form that expands outward from the edges. Its roof is covered with large green areas, and under the eaves are glass-enclosed volumes.
“Initial concept drawings show a striking pavilion with a fluid, ribbon-like form surrounded by lush greenery and pedestrian-friendly pathways that seamlessly connect the city center to the waterfront,” Heatherwick Studio said in a statement about the project. This dynamic form integrates the park with the city and offers an impressive view of the Ohio River. At the same time, pedestrians can move freely, surrounded by green spaces that encourage social interaction. The renovated spaces are enhanced with naturally shaded walkways, rest areas and a large plaza that can host cultural events.
The materials used in the project are selected to be compatible with nature and environmentally friendly. This transformation of Belvedere Park is seen as an important step in strengthening Louisville's urban identity. Supporting the cultural and social fabric of the city, this project aims to create a center of attraction for locals and tourists.
According to the studio, the plot is the size of four soccer fields and the proposed building is designed to occupy the entire plot. Scheduled to begin construction in 2026, the project will be a powerful example of how modern urban planning and architecture can benefit society.
