World Architects Day, declared by the International Union of Architects (UIA) in 1985, is celebrated on the first Monday of October every year. It is simultaneously celebrated with the United Nations World Habitat Day, which was established from 1985 with the theme of "Shelter is my right" and with aim of "to remind the world of our collective responsibility for the future" day. Celebrations continue during the first week of October with events organized in line with the theme determined.
This year,
the theme of the day was determined as "Clean environment for a healthy
world" in order to address the problems that have been overshadowed by the
COVID-19 pandemic as such related to housing, public spaces and the
environment. Besides, the concept of "sustainability" has focused.
Housing:
According to
UN Habitat, more than 1.6 billion people worldwide currently lack essencial
housing needs. This figure is expected to increase to 40 percent of the world's
population by 2030.
Public
Spaces:
Evaluating
the potentials and planning future visions of renovated and transformed public
buildings and public spaces has been an important factor in reaching safe and
healthy living space in line with the needs brought by the pandemic.
Climate
Change and a Carbon Free World:
Cities are
responsible for 75 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, with
transportation, buildings, energy and waste management accounting for the bulk
of urban greenhouse gas emissions.
The UIA said
in a statement that “architects are equipped to respond to the complex
challenges of the built environment.” It was also noted that the UIA's
Sustainable Development Goals Commission is working to build a bridge between
UN initiatives and the practices of architects around the world.
International
Union of Architects (UIA) organized a panel started with opening remarks of
José Luis Cortés, UIA President and moderated by Martha Thorne from IE School
of Architecture and Design in Spain on 4th of October. The keynote speaker of
the webinar was Former Director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr.
Margaret Chan.
