Transformation Project: Arequipeña Bottle Tiles

Transformation Project: Arequipeña Bottle Tiles
19/10/2023

The city of Arequipa in Peru has one of the highest radiation levels in the world. The problem is getting worse with the deterioration of the ozone layer and other geographical factors, and thousands of urban residents are affected by this situation. Many survivors are not aware of the danger until it is too late. Cerveza Arequipeña Bear and the civic organization Por Un Perú sin Cáncer joined forces with VMLY&R to raise awareness to confront the problem and cope with the sun in open spaces.

Shaping Cerveza Arequipeña Beer bottles and making them ready for use

For the first step of the project, which started with the goal of protection from sunlight, Arequipeña beer bottles could be a material that could be used in a design in a public space, they were tested first. This bottle has high UV-400 protection, which normally protects beer from UV rays. So why weren't they using these bottles to protect the public as well? Based on this premise, they took advantage of the cylindrical shape to cut the bottles, successively combine these smoothly broken bottles and create Arequipeña bottle tiles. They took the first step of the design by using the beer bottles from this brand in this collaboration.

Tiles created from beer bottles were installed in different parts of Arequipa and caused many positive reactions and led to discussions on the biggest problem: how to minimize the effects of sunlight on humans by other means. Thanks to the creation of a QR code with the civic organization Por Un Perú sin Cáncer, people were able to receive protection tips and even create a platform where they could schedule a skin cancer screening near their location.

In the reuse project in the city of Arequipa, where beer bottles were used, it is very interesting that the beer bottles, in which consumer goods were packaged for protection purposes, especially the beer bottles containing beverages, were simply reshaped and transformed into a roof form. In the project, the beer bottles only went through a physical shaping process, no other chemical process was performed. In this way, the amount of energy used for the transformation project is quite low.

Transforming a used bottle into a shaded area that helps protect people from the sun is a project that can inspire many designs. It appears as a design that we come across while taking steps to reduce the impact of a health problem that needs attention across the country with a design.
